It’s hard to believe in five days I’ll be hitting the road with John as we make our way from Kansas City to San Diego Comic Con, with a brief stop in Austin, TX, to support the Hero Initiative at their booth and be the guest of James Hudnall in his booth! Neither John or I have attended before so it’s very exciting thinking about all of the creators we may meet while we’re there. Before we pack up and head out for peak geek nirvana I have some books I’ll be picking up this Wednesday which have me giddy like a school boy. It’s a Marvel sweep for me this week as I dive into the deep end of the Secret Wars event with two tie-in books and the fourth issue of the series while bidding adieu to everyone’s favorite rebel Princess in the final issue of her mini-series. I hope everyone has a safe and fun Fourth of July! Next week We’ll be bringing you new content as well as exclusive updates from FREAKING SAN DIEGO COMICON!!!
A-Force #2 (3.99, Marvel) I’ll be glad when this book is on a regular schedule. It’s been a long time between the first and second issues and I think this book has all of the elements needed to be a long term success. TAKE MY MONEY! With monsters appearing on the utopian island of Arcadia and threatening its inhabitants, She-Hulk and her team of Avengers set out to discover the source. But when they stumble upon a conspiracy that reaches far beyond Arcadia, She-Hulk may just find herself on the wrong side of the law! Wilson, Bennett, Molina, Martin 12+
Secret Wars #4 (3.99, Marvel) I’m still totally crazy every time there is a new issue of this book out. Last issue we saw one of the life rafts opened to reveal Star Lord, Thor, Spider-Man (Peter Parker), Captain Marvel, Black Panther, and Reed Richards. We also learn Strange found the raft three years before opening it and we also saw Dr. Strange assure Mr. Fantastic that Doom was the best fit for God on the new planet. The issue closed with the Thors descending on Thanos and his crew. I really want to see more of Stephen Strange and Doom together as Hickman has created a real sense of some larger backstory between the two, and I can’t wait to see how they continue to use Sue and the kids as part of Victor’s team. The only thing we know about this issue is the teaser, “All the angels sing!” Argh! I can’t wait until Wednesday! Hickman, Ribic, Svorcina 12+
Princess Leia #5 (3.99, Marvel) I personally believe this book could continue well past five issues, but I also appreciate the fact they have told a specific story which will have a definitive conclusion and that they did it with the same creative team all five issues. Bravo! After meeting Nien Numb last issue and learning more about his backstory the issue concluded with Leia in the belly of an Imperial Shuttle, the result of a prisoner swap for an Alderaanian refugee whom she’s never met before. This issue she finds a way to escape her Imperial captors once more and lead a daring attack against them! Will this end up being a slaughter or do the rebels have a chance to strike back against the Empire? Waid, Dodson, Dodson, Bellaire 12+
Ultimate End #3 (3.99, Marvel) I was a casual Marvel Ultimate Universe reader. I picked up the first two years of Ultimate Spider-Man and I thought the Ultimate Human book was an interesting take on the Hulk. So when I learned the Ultimate Universe would be ending with the Secret Wars event I was curious as to how it was all going to get wrapped up. Issue two saw the destruction of the Ultimate Universe Hawkeye, the teaming up of Tony Starks from Earth-616, (Our Earth), and Earth-1610, (Ultimate Universe Earth), and a set up for a giant fight between the Earth-616 Hulk and Ultimate Human, (Ultimate Universe Hulk). Whew! This issue has more fighting! The end is near! (And it’s a Secret Wars tie-in!) Bendis, Bagley 12+
