It’s another awesome week of new releases! I’m so happy to see such diversity in the types of titles and leading protagonists many of the major publishers are putting on the shelves today. I’m also reveling in the nostalgia of stories I loved when I was younger being mashed up and brought into an epic storyline redefining an entire universe. This week I get to go to space twice, revisit an old friend, and play in a world where every version of hero and villain takes me back to a story I loved as a wee lad. Take my hand and let’s go read some comics!

Descender #2 ($2.99, Image): Image is really hitting their stride with their sci-fi offerings this year, and Descender is one of their most ambitious titles. It is about a young robot’s effort to survive in a time when all androids have been outlawed throughout the galaxy. Jeff Lemire, (Sweet Tooth and Trillium), & Dustin Nguyen, (Little Gotham), deliver issue two of the adventure this week where the robot hunting scrappers begin to close in on TIM-21 and the reasons for his being on the mining colony are discovered! (17 + yrs)

Nameless #3 ($2.99, Image): Nameless is the type of story you’d expect from Grant Morrison. Space travel, occult fixations, and mystery worlds are all on the menu with this title and Chris Burnham’s art keeps everything tense and dramatic. On a secret base on the moon a container has been opened with detailed plans to save the Earth from the planet crushing asteroid Xibalba. As the team begins to explore the underground tunnels of the asteroid, they discover the remnants of an intergalactic war fought before the age of antiquity. Human remains, nightmarish visions,  and unknown things from other planets push the heart pounding tempo on this story as the team tries to uncover the secrets hidden in Xibalba’s winding labyrinth of passageways.  (17 + yrs)

Spider-Woman #6 ($3.99, Marvel Comics): Dennis Hopeless, (Big Thunder Mountain Railroad), and Javier Rodriguez, (Daredevil and Superior Spider-Man), have taken the title in a new direction since issue five toward a younger reading audience. In doing so they have regained some of the magic of the character development and dialogue missing from other Spider family books. This month we see Jessica team up with Ben Urich, (the unintended moral compass for many of the heroes of New York City), to investigate who is murdering the families of super villains. (12 + yrs)

Convergence #1 ($4.99, DC): Convergence is the type of story you always wanted to read as a kid. Different versions of your favorite characters battling it out for the remaining spots in the new universal order is always a thrilling proposition. I will admit I’m a little skeptical of the DC plan given their weird handling of seemingly simple PR issues and fan expectations, but Hillary highlighted issue #0 last week and I’m staying with this title because I really WANT to enjoy the series and to see if Warner Bros/DC will put together a compelling reason for me to continue spending my entertainment dollars on their products after the event. (12 + yrs)
