Once again, the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! is proud to present four comics we want for the new comic book day on March 25. For the record, this is not an easy task. Pouring over the release lists, my first pass I think I nominated around 18 comics and five or six trade paperbacks and hardcovers. So I whittled that list down again to about 8 titles, and then finally to the four I present to you today. These are definitely four comics that interest me the most. But if you don’t agree, post your choices in the comments below!

Jem and the Holograms #1 ($3.99, IDW): Leave it to the smart minds at IDW to mine yet another 1980s animation property and turn it into an ongoing comic. Meet Jerrica Benton, the lead singer of the group known as the Holograms. Also in the band is Jerrica’s younger sister Kimber, and their friends/foster sisters Aja and Shana. But Jerrica also has a secret identity. With the help of her holographic computer Synergy, Jerrica can transform herself into Jem. But what kind of challenges will Jem and the Holograms face in 2015, besides battle of the band showdowns against the Misfits and the Stingers? Expect writer Kelly Thompson and artist Ross Campbell to take the band to new heights. And given IDW’s track record with licensed books, I expect this to become a popular title!

Multiversity: Ultra Comics #1 ($4.99, DC Comics): This is it! Everything that Grant Morrison has been working on with the Multiversity project that started last September moves one issue closer to a conclusion with Ultra Comics. This time, the battle goes to Earth-33, and you as the reader are going to be integral for the survival of the known universe. Don’t let the #1 designation on this book fool you. This is actually the eighth book in the Multiversity series that writer Grant Morrison has been working on for years. Artist Doug Mahnke, who once had the opportunity to hang out with the WCPE guys at a Hero Initiative table in Kansas City, lends his talents to this penultimate chapter. Whether you have been buying the individual issues all along, or are waiting for the collected edition to read this all at one time, this will be a book that fans will be talking about.

Pastaways #1 ($3.99, Dark Horse Comics): We have been very transparent in our support of writer/artist Matt Kindt, if you have listened to any of our podcasts in the past. Kindt is one of the most creative minds in the business today, and his books are always an entertaining experience. For this miniseries at Dark Horse, Kindt is writing the book and collaborating with Scott Kolins, who in my opinion is one of the best Flash artists of all time. For this book, a team of deep-time explorers crash land in the distant past — specifically, the year 2015. Having to deal with primitive devices like cars and the Internet, the Pastaways must defend Earth from dinosaurs and giant robots coming to the planet through a tear in the time rift. This has all the makings to be a fun read, and I cannot wait to get my hands on this book on Wednesday!

The Valiant #4 ($3.99, Valiant Entertainment): We have been very transparent in our support of writer/artist Matt Kindt, if you have listened to any of our podcasts in the past. Oh wait, I already told you that, didn’t I? Anyway, writers Jeff Lemire and Kindt, as well as artist Paolo Rivera, bring to a conclusion the Valiant crossover event. Bloodshot and Geomancer are the last heroes standing to face off agains the Immortal Enemy and his darkness. Can they save the Earth, and themselves? Valiant has become “the little publisher that could” in an industry dominated by Marvel, DC, and Image. Bringing back familiar (and well-remembered) characters, and using top-level creative talents to craft a new universe, Valiant has created a small but entertaining universe of heroes and stories that is very reminiscent of the budding Marvel Universe circa 1964. Pick up The Valiant, as well as some other Valiant titles, and be prepared to be surprised by how much you enjoy it!
