“How many comics? Four. When do we want them? New comic book day.”
Welcome back to FCIW for NCBD. Yes, here at the offices of WCPE, we’re big on acronyms. (BOA!)
This week, I am going to tell you about four comics I want to buy on new comic book day. If you’re lucky, perhaps later I will regale you with tales of four items I need to buy at the grocery store!
Justice League #48 ($3.99, DC Comics): I remember LOVING the old JLA/JSA team-ups when I was a child. Inter-Earth crossover tales were my favorite! Now, when I go back to re-read them, they don’t seem to quite have the excitement they once held. In fact, most of the moments I remember best were cover images, not even appearing in the story for the most part. This current run on Justice League, “The Darkseid War,” has really captured a lot of that same magic. In addition to Darkseid and the New Gods characters, this epic also boasts the Crime Syndicate (evil JLA from another Earth). In this issue, the League has to throw in with the Crime Syndicate to defend the universe from the Anti-Monitor! My inner 8-year-old is especially excited for this issue. This is really turning out to be another enjoyable turn from writer Geoff Johns. Justice League #48 features art and cover by Jason Fabok.
Patsy Walker, A.K.A. Hellcat! #3 ($3.99, Marvel Comics): I really enjoyed the 2014-2015 She-Hulk series written by Charles Soule and drawn (mostly) by Javier Pulido, and this Hellcat! series is a natural progression of the characters Soule used in She-Hulk. When I was a child in the 1970s, I really enjoyed Hellcat, but mainly for the costume, which I thought was pretty cool. Since watching the Netflix/Marvel Jessica Jones series, I have found an all new appreciation for Patsy Walker. Although I missed the first two issues of this book, I’m definitely going to pick up the third. This book promises a battle against New York’s toughest scourge…BEDBUGS! Written by Kate Leth with art and cover by Brittney Williams.
Faith #2 ($3.99, Valiant Entertainment): The second issue of Faith is all secret conspiracies in the Hollywood Hills and ex-boyfriends and ex-teammates! Oh yeah, plus an alien threat! Get in on the ground floor for the Valiant book that has been the most-talked about new book of 2016. You want to know what the hip kids are talking about? Here’s your chance, Marvin. Written by Jody Houser with art by Francis Portela and a cover by Jelena Kevic-Djurdjevic.
Saga #34 ($2.99, Image Comics): No matter how I try to explain Saga to people who haven’t read it, it always sounds ridiculous. So I’m not even gonna bother here, folks. Just take a stranger at his word. If you haven’t read Saga and you love comic books, do yourself a favor and hop on board one of the more magical trains to come through this part of town in a long while. The characters? Amazing. The character designs? Amazing. The story? Weird, but Amazing. DO YOU SENSE A PATTERN? It’s a buck cheaper than most comics on the shelf. Take a chance and Treat Yo’ Self! With Brian K. Vaughan writing and Fiona Staples on art, you really can’t go wrong here, people! Go. Now. Read!
Thanks for reading my four picks for new comic day! After all, I’m just a dude who buys four comic books!
