Welcome back to the weekly WCPE feature that takes the new comic spinner rack and gives it a big “Price Is Right” spin to see what new books shake off and land in our buy pile! What four comics do YOU want for New Comic Book Day?

Silver Surfer #1 ($3.99, Marvel Comics):  After taking Dawn Greenwood on a Doctor Who-style tour of the universe to its end, the Silver Surfer brings her back to show her the majesty of the planet Earth in the Marvel Universe, in a way she’s never seen it before. This time the tour comes with monsters, magic and a secret that could change everything! The first issue of the post-Secret Wars Silver Surfer makes for a great entry point into the galaxy-spanning adventures of the cosmic surfer. I typically enjoy just about anything that Dan Slott writes, and a handful of moments in the first series point to Slott being a very big Doctor Who fan. If you consider yourself both a Marvel fan and a Whovian, you’ll find some familiar notes played in the tune of the series, more of a Whovian sensibility than anything else. Mike Allred’s crisp lines are the perfect match to Slott’s crisp dialog, and once you see the universe through the Surfer’s eyes, you’ll want to take a monthly trip with him around the cosmos on his surfboard!

Star Wars #15 ($3.99, Marvel Comics): Writer Jason Aaron has been nailing it month after month on the main Star Wars title, and I’m very excited to get the next installment of the adventures of Obi-Wan Kenobi during his exile on Tatooine! We all get a sense that there was some bad blood between Uncle Owen and old Ben Kenobi as Luke Skywalker was growing up, but we’ve never known what happened to cause Owen to dislike Obi-Wan so much. In this flashback to the journals of Obi-Wan Kenobi, we begin to find out where Ben went wrong as Luke’s silent protector. With the surge in Star Wars popularity following the release of The Force Awakens, I would think that this book won’t be on the shelves for too long! If you haven’t already, add it to your pull list! This issue features art and cover by Mike Meyhew.

Captain Marvel #1 ($3.99, Marvel Comics): Another post-Secret Wars relaunch of a popular Marvel title, and with all of the rumors floating around that she may show up in the Captain America: Civil War film, it would be a great time to acquaint (or re-acquaint) yourself with Marvel’s flagship character, Captain Marvel! Carol Danvers takes up a soaring new role as Captain Marvel, as the commander-in-chief of the all-new Alpha Flight space program! This new iteration of the Alpha Flight group (which started out as a rag-tag group of Canadian heroes and oddballs) acts as the frontline against otherworldly incursions and once again, Captain Marvel walks the fine line between duty and honor as she becomes leader of the program! The blazing hot writing team of the Marvel’s Agent Carter television series, Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas, bring their uncanny knack for writing a strong, razor-sharp female characters to bear alongside the talented Kris Anka on interior art and cover.

Doctor Fate #8 ($2.99, DC Comics): Doctor Fate continues to be an updated ride into the mystical side of the DCU! Paul Levitz and Sonny Liew are a great team and continue to deliver fresh takes on the golden helmet with interesting storytelling and dramatic visuals. In this issue, young Khalid is left to clean up the mess after the flood tides of Anubis, with doubts and lingering questions about his faith and heritage causing him to search for answers. This is definitely not your father’s Doctor Fate. Or your mother’s! Read this book!
