Four Comics I Want for NCBD: 2015/09/23

Apparently the theme this week is amazing female-led comics! I didn’t even realize it until after I wrote the article, but all these issues feature strong women as the main protagonists. Its great to see that comic publishers are starting to realize there is demand for books about our favorite comic ladies. I hope you will consider picking up these four fantastic issues and don’t forget to tell me what’s on your pull list this week!

Witchblade #184 ($3.99, Image Comics): This comic is one that I am both excited and sad to pick up. This happens to be the issue that leads into the last Witchblade comic EVER. OK, OK, so there will be a Witchblade spin-off series, Twitch, coming out soon but this will be the last time Sara Pezzini will wield the blade. Witchblade was one of the very first comic book series I really got hooked on, and one of the few books I read the second I pick it up. It is definitely disappointing that this will be the end of an era, but one can at least hope that they end it well. According to Matt Hawkins, any reader of Witchblade past or present will be able to jump in and get the final story of Sara Pezzini, so you don’t even have to be caught up to enjoy these last few issues.

IXth Generation #5 ($3.99, Image Comics): I may not have my Witchblade anymore, but the rest of the Top Cow universe seems to be going strong. Generation IX is back with a new story arc and I have high hopes for this one. Matt Hawkins took a while to set up the rather complex storyline and develop the characters in the first arc, but it definitely started to pay off by issue #4. I suspect #5 will jump right into the action. The solicit says this issue starts out with a lot of people dying, so it will be interesting to see how that plays out!

True Believers Silk #1 ($1.00, Marvel Comics): This is one series that I unfortunately didn’t get to pick up the first time, but Marvel is giving us another chance with their “True Believers” re-releases. Silk and Princess Leia #1 are the first two installments of 10 female-led blockbuster titles that will be returning to comic shops this month. The Spider-Verse has gained some amazing new characters lately, and Silk seems like one of the best ones, from what I’ve read about her so far. I absolutely love her character design — I seriously need to cosplay her at some point!. The cover by Eisner Award winner Dave Johnson is stunning and, from what I hear, the interior is just as good. Oh, and I almost forgot to mention the best thing about this comic, it’s only $1! Now you have absolutely no reason to not pick it up.

Harley Quinn & Power Girl #4 ($3.99, DC Comics): This is one of the most fun comics I have read in a long time. Harley Quinn and Power Girl are fine alone but I absolutely love them together. Harley and Power Girl seem like an unlikely team-up, but it works out really well and their banter has been consistently entertaining. Sure this comic isn’t going to win any awards, but sometimes it’s nice to read something that is light and a little silly. I really love the art as well, Stephanie Roux’s style works perfect with the story and she completely nails all the facial expressions. If you like Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti’s work, then you will certainly enjoy this mini-series as well; I had the pleasure of meeting them at Dragon Con and they are just as nice as they are talented!
