It’s such a great time to be a nerd. It seems like every other week, there is a new comic-based movie or show. On top of all that, we get amazing comics like these every Wednesday on New Comic Book Day! What nerdy things are you looking forward to this week?

Switch #3 ($3.99, Image Comics): After a successful 20-year run, one of my favorite series, Witchblade, is gone. I can’t be too sad though because in its place is a fantastic new series, Switch. This title gives the Witchblade-universe a much-needed reboot and, more importantly, a new bearer in Mary. The Witchblade is known for seeking strong, powerful women as bearers, so when it chooses Mary, a timid but witty teenager, she is confused, to say the least! Sejic does a fantastic job of re-configuring the complicated and lore-heavy Top Cow universe to make it both accessible to new readers and still familiar to old ones. Oh, and did I mention how insanely talented creator Stjepan Sejic is? He does everything in Switch: story, pencils, color, lettering, and somehow he makes me feel invested in Mary and her story after only two issues. Whether you are a fan of the old Witchblade series or know nothing about it, I would highly recommend picking up Switch.

Dept. H #1 ($3.99, Dark Horse Comics): New York Times best-selling creator Matt Kindt has a brand new ongoing series that you won’t want to miss! Dept. H is best described as an undersea noir mystery thriller. Each issue will follow special investigator Mia for a 24 hour period as she investigates a murder in a deep-sea research station. To make things even more interesting terrifying, sea monsters and an impending flood are thrown into the mix as well! Early reviews of Dept. H are overwhelmingly positive and after MIND MGMT, I expect nothing short of amazing from Matt Kindt. I’m especially looking forward to seeing the work of his wife Sharlene Kindt who will add gorgeous watercolors to Matt’s already great pencils!

Mighty Thor #6 ($3.99, Marvel Comics): Mighty Thor has been one of Marvels’ most consistent titles, and probably the one I look forward to the most each month. In the last issue of Mighty Thor, Jason Aaron brought the first arc to a satisfying conclusion with the epic fight between Thor and Odin. I’m really looking forward to seeing what Aaron has in store for us in the next arc, but first, he will treat us to a special Throwback Thor’s day in this sixth issue! This will be a special tale of a young Thor in the age of Vikings and, according to the solicit, he will fight a very exciting enemy, Viking Hulk! It may be a departure from the over-arching story, but I have to admit the throwback Viking story sounds like a ton of fun and it will feature a very talented guest artist, Rafa Garras.

Captain Marvel #4 ($3.99, Marvel Comics): The all-new Captain Marvel series really hit its stride last month and gave us that epic space adventure we’ve come to expect from Carol and her Alpha Flight team. In the previous issue, Carol began suffering from hallucinations and apparently she is losing her powers, so I’m hoping we will get more insight on her situation this week. I love that writers Michelle Fazekas and Tara Butters are incorporating memories from her past and letting us see a different, more emotional side of Carol Danvers. Captain Marvel is definitely worth reading. It’s incredibly well- constructed and always leaves me wondering what will happen next!
