Its almost Wednesday again, arguably the best day of the week for us nerdy types! This week, DC’s Convergence is ending and Marvel Secret Wars is still in full swing. I know everyone is desperately trying to keep up with these major events but don’t get lost in the myriad of tie-ins because there are some pretty great things going on outside of these events as well! These are the four comics I deem worthy enough to be added to your pull list. Let me know if you agree in the comments!
Inferno #1 ($3.99, Marvel Comics): Inferno may be an inconsequential part of the Marvel Secret Wars/Battleworlds event but I’m still pretty stoked about it. X-Men battling demons in a fiery hell-consumed Manhattan — what’s not to love? In this world, the X-Men have failed to defeat the horde of demons from the 1989 X-Men “Inferno” storyline. Now, five years after their retreat, Colossus and a small group of remaining mutants go to rescue his sister, Illyana. I’m particularly looking forward to seeing the return of characters I loved from the old “Inferno” storyline including Darkchilde and the Goblin Queen (Madelyne Pryor). With the talented Dennis Hopeless on story and Javier Garron on art, this is defiantly one Secret Wars event I wouldn’t want to miss! Also, if you’re a variant lover like I am, don’t forget to pick up the amazing cover by Adi Granov!
Fight Club 2 #1 ($3.99, Dark Horse Comics): Do you love the cult classic movie “Fight Club”? Wish there was a sequel? Well now there is! We finally get to see the next chapter of this amazing story play out in comic book form. Fight Club 2 picks up 10 years after Project Mayhem with Sebastian living a normal life with a wife and kid, but all of that is about to change with the return of his alter-ego, Tyler Durden. The only disappointing part is that it is technically a sequel of the book, and it does not feature Brad Pitt’s or Ed Norton’s likenesses. One thing is for sure though, Chuck Palahniuk and Cameron Stewart will make this a comic that is hard not to talk about.
All-New Hawkeye #3 ($3.99, Marvel Comics): I’ve honestly never considered myself a Hawkeye fan but I’m really enjoying All-New Hawkeye so far. The new creative team of Jeff Lemire and Ramon Perez has done a great job adding their own style, while continuing to build on the amazing previous run by Matt Fraction and David Aja. The dynamic between the two Hawkeyes, Clint and Kate, is a lot fun, and I love how they use flashbacks to give us more background on Clint Barton’s character. This week I am looking forward to learning more about both Hawkeyes and about the three creepy kids they freed from the Hydra base last issue.
Genius Vol. 1 TPB ($24.99, Image Comics): Now that the full story is collected in this trade, there is no excuse not to pick up Genius! There is nothing out there quite like this mini-series from Top Cow — it is smart, action-packed, and culturally relevant. One reason I love Image so much is because of the unique and diverse titles they continue to put on the shelves. Where else would you find a story about a young black woman who unites the gangs of LA to forcefully succeed from the Union? What makes this book even better is the fact that its actually co-written and drawn by black creators. I honestly can’t decide what my favorite part of Genius is, the interesting and well-crafted story or the beautiful art by Afua Richardson. Pick up this book and let me know what you think!
