This is an exciting week to be a comic book nerd. First off there is the highly anticipated release of Avengers 2: Age of Ultron, I don’t know about you but I will definitely be seeing it more than once! Then this Saturday, we have Free Comic Book Day, the only day of the year you can walk into your local shop and get comics that are absolutely FREE. To top off this perfect week, there are several amazing issues coming out tomorrow. Do you share my enthusiasm for these four comics? Let me know in the comments!
Red One #2 (2.99, Image) Red One has everything I look for in a new comic book series: a novel and fun concept, a strong female lead, and stunning art by the Dodson team. This promising new series can be described as a Russian spy tale meets superhero epic. While the plot of a Russian spy becoming an American superhero may seem a little silly, I think the fun, over-the-top, pulp fiction feel somehow makes it work. The first issue did a lot to set up the storylines and introduce multiple characters, but I’m looking forward to a little more action and character development in this second issue.
The Multiversity #2 (5.99, DC Comics) The Multiversity #2 is the final chapter in a series of one-shots about the multiple universes within the DCU. Up until now, the plots of each issue have taken place on different worlds and have been seemingly unrelated. Multiversity #2 will finally bring the great heroes of Multiverse together for the final fight against the Gentry. I’m really excited to see how Morrison ties everything together and answers all the questions that have been raised in previous issues. Coming in at a little over 50 pages, I hope this massive issue is the multi-universe superhero epic we have been waiting for, and with Grant Morrison on story and Ivan Reis/Joe Prado on art, there is no reason to pass this issue up.
Sunstone Vol. 2 TP (14.99, Image) “I’m not into BDSM…but this story…I get it”. This quote has become the tagline for this series written and illustrated by Stjepan Sejic, and for good reason. The story is about two lonely women who find each other online to fulfill specific sexual needs, but it becomes so much more than that. At it’s core, Sunstone is an interesting and beautifully written love story. Sejic is amazing at writing characters that are real and relatable; he makes me feel invested in Ally and Lisa and their relationship from the very beginning. Don’t get me wrong, there is definitely a lot of kinky sex, but the story and stunning art is the reason I am desperately awaiting the release of this second trade.
Bitch Planet #4 (3.50, Image) I know we have talked about Bitch Planet a lot, but I decided to include it again because its that great. So far Eisner-nominated writer Kelly Sue Deconnick has done a great job establishing the hierarchy of the dystopian society and developing the characters. I love how Bitch Planet maintains a perfect balance: its political but still fun and it has exactly the right amount of action and story setup. My only complaint is that I have to wait a whole month for each issue to come out, they always leave me wishing there was more! I am sure this upcoming issue will not disappoint either. According to the solicit, we will meet a “secret prisoner that may be the ringer Kam’s girls need if they hope to survive the coming death-match!”
